Conversion Tracking Checklist for Local Businesses
October 9, 2026
How to Set a Digital Marketing Budget for a Small Business
October 23, 2026A qualified lead is an enquiry that meets the criteria your business uses to decide whether it can serve the customer and whether a next step is worthwhile. It is a more useful decision signal than a button click, but it still does not guarantee a sale.
For local service businesses, the distinction matters when evaluating marketing spend. If you count every enquiry as equally valuable, an inexpensive campaign can look successful while your team spends time on requests it cannot fulfil.
Agree on the definition before comparing campaigns
Start with a short checklist that your team can apply consistently. The criteria should reflect your actual service and capacity, rather than an arbitrary scoring model.
- Service fit: the customer needs a service you offer.
- Location fit: the job is in an area you serve.
- Timing: you can reasonably meet the requested timeframe.
- Commercial fit: the job meets your minimum scope or other relevant requirements.
- Next step: there is enough information to arrange an estimate, appointment or other agreed action.
For example, an HVAC repair request in your service area may qualify once your team confirms the problem and appointment availability. A supplier sales email or an enquiry outside your coverage area belongs in a different category. Record the reason consistently so the definition can be reviewed later.
Keep enquiry, qualified lead and booked work separate
| Stage | Evidence | Useful question |
|---|---|---|
| Contact intent | A phone, email or WhatsApp link click | Did the visitor try to contact us? |
| Enquiry | A received form or actual conversation | Did a request reach the team? |
| Qualified lead | The team confirmed the agreed criteria | Can we serve this request? |
| Booked work | An appointment or job was confirmed | Did the enquiry progress? |
| Completed work | The job was delivered and revenue recorded | What was the commercial outcome? |
Your website can observe some of these stages. Later stages usually require an update from your team or lead system. Avoid inferring a qualified lead from a thank-you page alone.
Use a simple lead record
A basic lead record can include an internal enquiry reference, date, source when known, requested service, qualification status, reason and final outcome. Limit access to the people who need the information. Keep personal customer details in the lead system rather than copying them into ordinary analytics events.
Use a separate test status for internal checks. Deduplicate repeated requests according to an agreed business rule. Two form submissions from one person may be follow-ups, while two different jobs from the same customer may need separate records.
Compare cost at the same stage
Illustrative example: $900 in ad spend produces 30 enquiries, 12 qualified leads and six booked jobs. Cost per enquiry is $30, cost per qualified lead is $75 and cost per booked job is $150. These are example figures, not GetBerq client results or industry benchmarks.
Compare the same reporting period and allow time for enquiries to progress. A recent campaign may still have open estimates. Review booked revenue and job costs before drawing conclusions about profit.
Can qualified leads be used in Google Ads?
Google Ads supports importing offline lead outcomes, including qualified leads and converted leads, through suitable conversion setups. The right approach depends on your lead system, identifiers, permissions and implementation. Review Google’s offline conversion guidance before choosing a method.
Begin by verifying that the initial enquiry is measured once and reaches your team. A reliable qualification process is needed before later outcomes can guide campaign decisions.
What should you do this week?
- Write a five-line definition of a qualified lead for your business.
- Apply it to a recent set of enquiries and record unclear cases.
- Check that website submissions reach your inbox or lead system.
- Keep click, enquiry and booking counts separate in reports.
- Review the reasons enquiries fail to qualify before changing ad spend.
