What Is a Qualified Lead? A Guide for Local Service Businesses
October 16, 2026A small business digital marketing budget should connect what you can afford to spend with the customers you want to acquire. Start with your cash limit, include both advertising and delivery costs, and measure qualified enquiries and completed sales before increasing spend. There is no single percentage of revenue that fits every business.
If you run a service business, a busy phone is useful only when the calls match your service, location and capacity. This guide shows how to build a practical monthly budget, compare results and decide what to improve first. The calculations below are illustrations, not performance forecasts or GetBerq client results.
1. Build your digital marketing budget around a business goal
Choose one outcome for the next planning period: more suitable enquiries, more booked appointments or more completed jobs. Write down your service area, the work you can accept and how quickly you can respond. A campaign can produce enquiries that your team cannot serve; spending more will not solve that problem.
Use recent business records to estimate the contribution from a typical new customer: revenue less the variable costs of providing that service. Keep fixed overhead, cash reserves and profit expectations in view when deciding how much acquisition spend your business can support. If those figures are uncertain, use a conservative range and review it with the person responsible for your accounts.
2. Separate media spend from the cost of running marketing
Your platform budget is only one line in the plan. Put all costs on the same sheet so that a cheap click does not hide an expensive acquisition process.
| Budget item | What to include | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Advertising | Google Ads, Meta Ads or another selected channel | Actual billed spend and qualified enquiries |
| Management | Agency fees or internal time | Scope, reporting and decision ownership |
| Content and creative | Copy, landing pages, photos and illustrations | Relevance to the offer and audience |
| Measurement | Form checks, call measurement and necessary tools | Reliable capture without duplicate events |
For illustration, a $1,500 monthly plan might include $900 in media, $350 in management, $150 in creative and $100 in tools or measurement. These amounts are invented to demonstrate the categories. They are not a recommended allocation, a market benchmark or a GetBerq price quote. Your mix will depend on existing assets and the agreed scope.
3. Check acquisition economics before scaling
Track each stage separately. A form submission is an enquiry; a qualified enquiry meets your criteria; a booking is a commitment to a next step; a completed sale is an actual business result.
Media cost per qualified enquiry = advertising spend ÷ qualified enquiries. For a broader cost view, divide the total acquisition costs you choose to include by the new customers acquired, using the same time period and definition each month.
Suppose, purely as an example, $900 in advertising generates 18 qualified enquiries and six new customers. The media cost per qualified enquiry is $50, and media cost per acquired customer is $150. If all $1,500 of the illustrative plan is attributable to those six customers, the broader cost is $250 per customer. That is a different measure, so label it clearly. Allow for the delay between enquiry and sale rather than judging incomplete sales cycles.
If the result exceeds what the business can sustain, inspect targeting, the offer, the landing page and follow-up. Our conversion tracking checklist helps you check whether the underlying counts are dependable.
4. Choose a focused test and set spending boundaries
Pick a channel based on customer intent and the offer. Search advertising can be tested around services people actively seek. Social advertising can be tested where a useful message and creative can introduce the offer to a relevant audience. Neither channel is automatically the better choice for every business.
Agree a cash ceiling, the evidence needed to continue, and who can change the budget. Avoid spreading a limited budget across so many campaigns that none produces enough information to assess.
Google Ads uses an average daily budget. For most campaigns, daily billed spend can reach twice that average, while the monthly spending limit is generally 30.4 times the average daily budget. Budget changes and some campaign types require separate consideration. Check the current Google Ads budget guidance and your account’s budget report when setting a monthly ceiling.
5. Review lead quality and cash impact together
Review spend and tracking regularly. At the end of the planning period, compare qualified enquiries, booked work, completed sales and total costs. Include the team’s feedback about unsuitable enquiries and response times.
- Keep: activity producing suitable demand at a sustainable cost.
- Repair: a promising offer with a broken form, unclear page or slow follow-up.
- Pause: activity that is consistently irrelevant or unaffordable.
- Test next: one clear change with a defined question and spending limit.
For organic content, focus on questions your actual customers ask. Google recommends helpful, reliable content for people. A useful page should explain the service and support a decision; producing unrelated articles just to collect traffic does not create a coherent marketing plan.
Common questions about small business marketing budgets
What is a good digital marketing budget for a small business?
A workable budget is one the business can fund while testing a clearly defined acquisition goal. Include delivery costs and use your own margins, capacity and sales data. Treat any suggested percentage as a starting assumption to examine, not a rule.
Should I increase spending when enquiries rise?
First check suitability, cost, bookings and completed sales. More enquiries can include duplicates or requests you cannot serve. Increase spend only when the evidence and cash position support the decision.
Does this guide explain tax deductions?
No. It explains marketing planning and measurement. Tax treatment depends on your jurisdiction and circumstances; ask your accountant to classify the actual expenses in your records.
Start with a budget you can explain
Write down your spending ceiling, what each cost covers and what a successful enquiry looks like. That gives your team a basis for deciding whether to keep, repair or change the plan. If measurement is unclear, request a Free Tracking Check. For campaign management and wider marketing support, review our services and pricing and scope.
