Google AI Overviews and Local SEO: A Practical Guide
April 22, 2026What Is a Qualified Lead? A Guide for Local Service Businesses
October 16, 2026Your ad dashboard shows conversions, but your booking calendar tells a different story. Before increasing your budget, check what those conversions actually represent. A click on a phone number, a submitted enquiry and a booked job describe different stages of the customer journey.
This conversion tracking checklist helps local service businesses review the signals behind their reports. You can complete some checks on your website; others require access to Google Analytics, Google Ads or your lead records. Treat an unexpected result as something to investigate, rather than proof that a campaign is failing.
1. Define the business outcome behind each conversion
Write down what counts as a useful enquiry for your business. For a plumbing company, that might be a person requesting a service you offer within your service area. A recruitment enquiry or a sales pitch would not meet the same definition.
| Signal | What it tells you | What remains unknown |
|---|---|---|
| Phone-link click | A visitor clicked your phone link | Whether a call connected or became a useful enquiry |
| Successful enquiry submission | Your website accepted an enquiry | Whether it is relevant, genuine or ready to book |
| Qualified lead | The enquiry meets your agreed criteria | Whether the customer will purchase |
| Booked or completed job | The lead reached a defined commercial stage | Final profit, unless you also record job costs |
Use these distinctions when reviewing your Google Ads campaigns. Keep supporting engagement signals visible, and make sure the goals used to guide campaign decisions reflect the outcomes you want.
2. Test the complete form and call journey
Run an agreed test enquiry through your own website using clearly labelled test details. Check that the form accepts the submission, shows the expected success message and delivers the enquiry to the right inbox or lead system. Record the time so you can find the corresponding event later.
Google Analytics enhanced measurement includes form_start and form_submit events. Those event names alone do not establish that an enquiry reached your inbox or became a qualified lead. Compare the recorded action with the actual form outcome. Google’s enhanced measurement documentation explains the events and their parameters.
- Check the form on a phone as well as a desktop.
- Check whether invalid or incomplete submissions produce a conversion event.
- If you use a thank-you page, check whether reopening it creates another recorded conversion.
- For calls, establish whether you measure a phone-link click, a connected call or a separately qualified enquiry.
Example: a visitor taps “Call,” then cancels before placing the call. The click may still be a useful engagement signal, but it does not confirm that your business received an enquiry.
3. Check for duplicate conversions and missing events
One enquiry can appear in multiple reports. That can be expected when each platform reports its own view of the journey. The issue to investigate is whether the same action is counted more than intended within the reporting or bidding setup you use.
With appropriate account access, review your active conversion actions, their sources and the goals used by each campaign. If a native Google Ads conversion and an imported Analytics event both describe the same submission, check how each action contributes to the campaign’s goals before changing anything.
Use a small test log: action performed, time, expected event, observed event and enquiry received. A missing event could reflect consent choices, browser restrictions, implementation problems or reporting delays. Investigate the cause before treating every difference as a tracking defect.
4. Compare marketing reports with qualified leads
Bring your ad results and lead records together at a consistent stage of the journey. Count genuine enquiries, qualified leads and booked work separately. Use the same date range and allow for the time between first contact and booking.
Illustrative example: a campaign spends $1,200 and generates 40 enquiries. If 10 meet your qualification criteria, its cost per enquiry is $30 and its cost per qualified lead is $120. These figures answer different questions. They are an example, not a GetBerq client result or an industry benchmark.
Google supports importing later lead outcomes through enhanced conversions for leads and recommends qualified-lead or converted-lead goals for that setup. Whether this is suitable depends on your systems, permissions and data handling requirements. See Google’s offline conversion guidance before planning an implementation.
For a broader view of spend and outcomes, read our guide to tracking marketing ROI. A lower cost per recorded conversion is only useful when the underlying action supports your business goals.
5. Decide what to fix before increasing spend
Prioritize problems by the decision they could affect. A form that does not deliver enquiries needs immediate attention. An event with an unclear name needs a definition. A reporting difference needs investigation before it becomes a reason to pause a campaign.
- Repair: confirmed failures such as lost enquiries or an event firing at the wrong stage.
- Clarify: what each event means and which outcomes guide campaign decisions.
- Verify: repeat the test after a change and document the result.
- Review: compare qualified leads and booked work with spend before making a budget decision.
Reliable tracking improves the information available to you. Campaign performance also depends on demand, targeting, your offer, landing pages and how quickly your team responds to enquiries.
